A NOTE ABOUT PINES IN THE USA

Here is the list of species that have yellow pine as all or part of one or more of their common names, plus all of the OTHER names by which those species are called. As you can see, this pretty well makes "yellow pine" a relatively meaningless designation, but on this site I work with the cards I'm dealt and as an arbitrary decision, I have lumped all of these species here as "yellow pine" (but with the correct designations, such as longleaf, loblolly, etc. where available)

I was looking on Craig's List recently for any kind of wood I could find, as long as it was really cheap because I just wanted some extra stuff for shop jigs. Imagine my delight when I got these goodies REALLY cheap. There were a total of 8 raggity-ass, beat up, old growth Southern yellow pine stadium bench planks 8 feet long and 1.25" thick that some guy had in his storage unit for decades. All but one of them are quartersawn. There are bolt holes at each end of all of them and the faces are dirty but what a find! Old growth AND quartersawn! Two closeups are included and for more detail, see the sample plank directly below.

The color in this pic and the pics directly below is a bit too green. ALSO, I now hava a sample of loblolly pine from a reputable vendor (see directly below this set) and it looks nothing like this plank, so I'm now dubious that this even IS loblolly pine

I don't know if that's characteristic of loblolly pine, or is unusual. The one web pic that I have below shows are more "normal" wide early growth.

flat cut and quartersawn yellow pine

both sides of a sample plank of pressure treated Southern yellow pine --- HUGE enlargements are present. This sample was tiven to me by a neighbor who said it was taken from a water tower in NJ, build decades ago. I guessed it was pressure treated Doug Fir or pressure treated pine, but he was sure it was cypress. Later my friend Mark Peet too one look and sniffed it and said it's Southern yellow pine for sure. Since it clearly has resin canals, it certainly cannot be cypress and Mark's analysis is extremely reliable, so I'm going with pressure treated Southern yellow pine. Interestingly, treated wood is not used for water towers if the water is for human consumption but this water tower was used, indirectly, to water horse-race tracks.

This set of pics was contributed to the site by Joshua willis who identified it as Southern yellow pine. It is full of branch buds that did not grow out as full branches but got embedded in the bole and created this "bird's eye" look. Joshua very smartly included a couple of shots of end grains of such planks (he sent pics of several) showing clearly how the "branches" grew inside the bole. HUGE enlargements are present for all pics
